In this Doha Transit Tour Review, I will be covering what to expect and whether it is worth taking a transit tour during a layover in the airport.
If you are taking a long-distance flight, most of the time you will be transiting in Doha (thanks to the high-value offer from Qatar Airways at a reasonable price). I transited there countless times during my adventure in the Middle East and Africa.
I stayed in the airport lounge, sleeping pod, and of course also took part in the transit tours a couple of times. I hope you will find my experience useful.

A Quick Visit In Doha
If you want to visit “another Country”, then the typical Doha transit tour is the best way for you to achieve that with a 3 hour tour.
Minimum Layover Time Required For Transit Tour
The minimum layover time should be around 8 hours if you want to take a transit tour. A typical transit tour would be around 3 hours. Factoring in the immigration clearance time, 8 hours should be a good time for you to explore a bit of Doha without missing the flight. You may still be able to do that with 6 hours if the immigration queue is not long.
So, for those with 8 hours or less, I suggest you make sure of the world-class facility at the airport. After all, the Hamad International Airport ranks number 2 in the world. There are free playgrounds, inhouse-gardens and multiple sculptures for photo taking.
If you need a good shower or simple food, you could consider using the AL Maha Lounge. If you want to have a good sleep, the sleep pod at the south node or north node would be a good choice.
What To Expect From The Transit Tour
As I said, the typical Doha transit tour takes around 3 hours. You will be taking a bus with multiple stop points at city attractions such as the National Museum of Qatar, Pearl Island, Katara Cultural Village, and Souq Waqif.
The city tour used to be free, provided by Qatar Airways about 10 years ago. But now it is a paid tour. Compared to Qatar Airways, there are more options and varieties on OTA platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator. At the time of writing, I note that there are a couple of city tours in Doha with pickup / drop off at the airport for around 20 USD. It is much cheaper than the one by Qatar Airways for around 32 USD.
Why You May Not Want To Join The Transit Tour
Although I joined the city transit tour 3 times, you may not want to join the tour.
Why?
Because the tour is actually very brief, especially the one with Qatar Airways. Although most of the city attractions are not far from the airport, it is a very packed itinerary for a 3 hour tours. For all the museums, including the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum, you could only take a couple of pictures for say around 5 minutes without going inside.
For the attractions with a great skyline, like the Dhow Harbour, the Pearl Island, and the Pearl Monument. You could stay there for only may be around 20 minutes.
You will have more time for the Souq Waqif, like 30 minutes or so. However, it is barely enough for you to walk around and shop. It is impossible to have a great local lunch or dinner within that timeframe as well.
You will have approximately 20 minutes at the Katara Cultural Village. Yet again, you wouldn’t have a lot of free time after the explanation from the guide. For example, during my last visit, the guide had to talk fast while we were on the bus.
Why You May Still Want To Join The Transit Tour
Despite the packed itinerary and limited time, it is still a good chance to “visit another Country”. If you have a couple of more hours, there are options on GetYourGuide that can be as long as 4 hours or even 8 hours.
For example, I had my second transit tour with my friends as the final stop after a 2-week vacation in the Balkans and Greece. Despite visiting the more or less the same attractions again, it feels like a “good bonus point” after a long tour.
And even you have a couple of more hours. You could even go beyond the traditional city tour.

Why Not Experience The Dessert
If you are an adventure seeker, then the desert transit tour in Doha may be a better option for you. A typical tour includes a camel ride, ATV drive, and a visit to the famous inland sea in Doha. Of course, it costs more (and time), as compared to the city tour.
What Other Options Other Than City Tour
If your transit time is beyond 8 hours (i.e., 12 hours or even a day), you could go beyond the typical city tour. For example, one of my favorites is the desert safari tour bookable via GetYourGuide, which lets you experience the dunes outside Doha with activities like ATV riding, camel rides, sandboarding, and a visit to the Inland Sea ( Khor Al Adaid, a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site). To me, that’s a lot more interesting than a city center visit.
Of course, some options include both a city center visit and a desert safari. You should only join that if you have at least 12 hours for a layover or more. Or else, visiting the city center on your own would be a good option too, via Uber.
Doha Transit Tour Review: So Should I Take It?
Wrapping up this Doha transit tour review, there are plenty of ways to kill the boredom of a layover in Doha.
If you have the energy and are keen on “visiting another country” even briefly, I’d recommend the typical transit tour—it’s a low-effort way to see highlights without long-term planning. If you want more, the dessert safari tour is a great option too. Or you can do both at the same time with sufficient time.
If you choose to stay inside, the in-house facilities, shops, and restaurants in the airport shall keep you occupied. If you are looking for a shower or a good sleep, you could consider paying for the lounge or the sleeping pod.
