What currency is used in Bangkok
Unlike other ASEAN Countries like Cambodia and Laos, Thai Bhat (THB) is the only currency being used in Bangkok. You are not likely to purchase a souvenir with a 1 USD note. Although most shops in malls like Central World, Terminal 21, and Siam Icon accept cards, most open markets and even BTS stations take cash only.
In that, you will need to know where to exchange THB before going to Bangkok.
Where to exchange THB in Bangkok 2024 – the Best Rate
Unlike other ASEAN Countries, where you may need to compare different local exchange shops. Bangkok has very convenient money exchange options for travelers like us. For the best THB exchange rate, you just need to go for either SuperRich Thailand (the Green one) or SuperRich 1965 (the Orange one).
Recommended exchangers – Super Rich Thailand & Super Rich 1965
Both exchange companies offer transparent money exchange rates of Thai Baht. For example for USD, (be it exchange rate USD to THB or THB exchange rate to USD), they have only around 0.13 THB difference.
Other than that they also provide very decent rates for other ASEAN countries’ currency such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia (and even Vietnam) to Thai Bhat. It is very useful for tourists who have leftover currency from last ASEAN destination.
Other than offering the best rates for THB exchange, both exchangers have a network in most of the tourist icons in Bangkok. Despite the extensive networks, you may come across a situation which you would need to exchange thb in other shops. The below are for your reference.
Super Rich Turtle
SuperRich Turtle(SPRT) a JV partner with SuperRich 1965 to operate currency exchange in BTS stations. It also serves as a convenience store in BTS stations selling beverages, snacks, and other groceries. The rate offered is slightly worse off than Super Rich or Super Rich 1965. However, it serves as a secondary option due to its convenience in popular locations such as Asok BTS station.

Other than the Superrichs, you can also find other exchange shops in tourist areas but the rates would be worse. You can take reference of the rate offer from SupeRich Thailand or SupeRich 1965 websites. With this information, you can evaluate the thb exchange rates from these shops.
Banks & ATMs:
The least preferred options would be via Banks or ATMs. This is because you would incur an extra charge for exchange. Especially for ATMs, a handling fee could be as high as 220 THB (~ 6 USD). The only merit of the ATM is it is the only 24-hour money exchange in Bangkok.
Many bank branches in Bangkok offer currency exchange services, making them a convenient option for travelers. While the rates at bank branches are usually similar to those offered by ATMs, it’s worth considering if you’re in a shopping mall and need to exchange money quickly.
Where to exchange THB in Bangkok 2024 – the Worst Rate
The worst rate is in both airports in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport). As you can see from the image above, the spread for USD is 3 THB + (versus ~ 0.13 for both SupeRrichs).
If you are arriving at Suvarnabhumi airport, you can use the Superrich 1965 at the train station. If unfortunately, you arrive at Don Mueang International Airport and need to take the airport bus. You will need 50 THB in cash. In that case, you shall exchange as little as possible at the airport i.e. USD 5 only.
Should I exchange money before I travel to Thailand
Thai Bhat is not a major currency. In general, it is better to exchange THB in Thailand rather than exchanging beforehand. Vice versa, you should convert the THB back before leaving Bangkok.
