The Best Option From Tbilisi to Yerevan Is By Bus
The distance from Tbilisi to Yerevan is around 175 miles equivalent to 5 hour drive. Factoring in the border control for around 30 minutes, it takes around 5 and a half hours by land. That means whether you are taking a bus, private transfer, or driving on your own, the duration is similar. But the cost is very different.
Alternatively, you can also take a flight from Tbilisi to Yerevan. However, it is at least 5 times more expensive. And even if the flight time is less than an hour. The check-in time and onboarding time, not to mention taking Bolt to Tbilisi airport, would outweigh the timesaving.
For a train from Tbilisi to Yerevan, it could take more than 8 hours over 20 USD. Plus, it is way harder to book the train in advance than the bus.

Booking The Bus
Making a reservation for the bus to Yerevan is very easy. First, you just need to get onto 12GO inputting Tbilisi to Yerevan with the travel date. After that, you will see all the available slots. Then you can select, your preferred time slot and press “Book now”. On the next page, you will see the itinerary with bus details and Google links to pick up/drop off point.
Pressing the next step, you can input your number, email, and passenger information. After confirming the details and finishing the payment, you will receive an email of receipt. Within 24 hours (usually less), you will receive another email for the bus tickets with a QR code.
The bus ticket prices may vary but it is usually average at 20 USD (~ 50 GEL) per person. It is a very good deal, considering you saved lots of time for booking. Additionally, it is the cheapest option compared to other means of travel.
Then you just need to present your QR code on the day of travel to the driver and it is done.
For Tbilisi Yerevan Train, it could take more than 8 hours over 20 USD. Plus, it is way harder to book the train in advance than the bus. You can do the same for Yerevan Tbilisi bus transporation.

Timetables & Pick Up Points
Each day there are around 11 buses from Tbilisi to Yerevan. The first bus starts at 1 am and the last one at around 9 pm. The bus timetable and its pick-up information are all visible on 12GO.
For departures, the minivan departs from Tbilisi Isani Mall and drops off at Yerevan Abovyan Street (near Fork Museum). The other ones depart from Avlabari Metro Station, Tbilisi to Kilikia Bus Station, Yerevan.
During my last visit, I took the 1 pm bus from Isani Mall and highly recommend you to do so as well for bus departures. This is because the drop-off point at Yerevan (Abovyan Street) is a lot closer to the city center and most hotels or hostels. From there, it takes only around 15 minutes to walk to the Republic Square.
Isani Mall Tbilisi
Other than the more convenient drop-off point, Isani Mall is also the best departure point. It is a decent mall in Tbilisi with good restaurants and a big Carrefour. Additionally, there is a KFC inside the mall and a McDonald’s just opposite the mall.
During my visit, I did my final shopping for snacks and Carrefour and waited for the bus at McDonald comfortable. Besides, there is a free toilet just near the car park inside the mall. If you also depart at 1 pm like me, you could have good shopping and food. Then you will arrive in Yerevan at 6:30 pm for a good dinner after setting down.

The Bus Journey
The 5.5-hour bus journey is surprisingly comfortable. The first route is taking around 2 hours to reach the border control between Tbilisi and Yerevan. From there, you need to clear the Georgia customs border, get back on the car for the Armenia border entrance.
At the Georgia border, there is a toilet and a duty-free shop, in case you need some very last-minute shopping.
As a warm reminder, you need to carry all your luggage for crossing the Armenia border. You will be questioned about your previous entry to Azerbaijan (given the current conflict between the two Countries). However, I faced no problem by saying I just did a tour in Baku. This is also one of the reasons why we recommend the Caucasus travel sequence should always be Azerbaijan, Georgian then Armenia.
After clearing the customs, you will need to wait for the bus to continue your journey. There is an exchange shop after the custom. The rate for USD: AMD there is quite decent and only slightly worse than the ones in the city center. So you may want to exchange some cash while waiting for your bus.
On the way, to Yerevan city center, you can enjoy the mountain views. It is worth noting that the road is just close to the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. I even see two Country flags on top of two close summits. There will be another bus stop at a Gas station with a toilet and snack shops in Armenia.
After the gas station, you will arrive at the drop-off point in less than one hour.
