Kuang Heng Pratunam Hainanese Chicken Rice Review

Kuang Heng Chicken Review Feature Page

This blog post includes food recommendations, menus, branches, and other information for reviewing the Kuang Heng Pratunam Chicken Rice in Bangkok.

With over 90 years of history, Kuang Heng is one of the oldest Hainanese chicken rice brands in Bangkok since 1932. Despite, it is history it did not get as much popularity as other brands (i.e. Go-Ang Pratunam) nowadays. Although, for the Asian tourists or the local community it is still one of the must-go local shops for your visit to Bangkok.

The brand is featured in green color, while the GO-Ang Pratunam is in red / pink. In the Asian tourist community, we usually refer to them as “green chicken rice” and “red chicken rice”

With that, there are only three Kuang Heng branches in Bangkok, one at Phetchaburi Rd (near Central World / Pratunam Market); and another one at the MRT station of Rama 9; the last one is near Ratchaprarop station.

I have never been to the one at Rama 9 and the one at Ratchaprarop, given there are better options at Jodd Fairs Rama 9 night market.

Instead, the one at Phetchaburi is the one I usually go to, especially when the line at the red/pink one is too horrible. After all, it is just near Central World, Big C SuperCenter, and other icons that you will pass through lots of times during your visit to Bangkok.

So today our review mainly focuses on Kuang Heng Pratunam Chicken Rice (the one near Big C / Central World). Despite the food, price, and menu being the same in the two branches.

I have been to the shop several times and found it decent and cheap.

The Menu

The shop’s menu is straightforward. There are four categories namely Hainanese Chicken Rice, satay, toast, and drinks.

In the chicken rice menu, you can pick either steamed or fried chickens with different organs as a top-up. The price is totally affordable, a usual chicken rice is only 50 THB. That is less than 2 USD. Even if you add the top-ups, mix the chicken flavored, and order a soup, satay, or drink. Your budget can hardly go beyond 200 THB.

On the satay menu, there are chicken/pork options. The minimum order is 10 pieces for 80 THB. There are also other side dishes such as spring rolls, pork rib soups, and fish maw soup. Although satay is unique for Kuang Heng as compared to other chicken rice shops, the satay quality itself is only standard. I find the choral-grilled satay hawker at Bangkok Street is better.

For the toast menu, it is not expensive at around 15 – 30 THB. I did not try that given it seems to be super-sugary.  Drinks are standard Thai drinks such as coffee, juice, or soda. My recommendation would be Longan juice, as it seems to be less sugary.

For ordering, given the clear menu with pictures on it. You could easily order with the menus alone.

Top Food Recommendations

Needless to say, the must-try here is the Hainanese Chicken Rice. There are two options of chicken namely steamed or fried. If you are going there for the first time, you should pick mixed chicken rice.

For the side dishes, as I said the satay is just at par. If you love sweet food, then maybe the toast would be your cup of tea. My recommendation is toast + butter + panda kaya, given that panda kaya is a top local favorite in Southeast Asia.

For drinks, I would recommend local beers instead. The reason is given the shop operates until midnight. Maybe it’s nice to have a beer with chicken rice.

Dining Environment

The dining environment is more like a local street food shop at the Pratunam branch. However, if you walk slightly toward the right-hand side of the old shop, you will find a coffee shop-like extension there which is more decent and modern.

Although they are not as popular as Go-Ang, it is still hard to grab a seat during peak hours. Unfortunately, there seems to be no ticketing system there so you will have to wait there if there is a queue.

Again given its proximity to other tourist attractions. The Big C Headquarters is on the same side of the road within a 5-minute walk. You can even put your luggage at Big C first. The Central World is just within an 8-minute walk and 10-minute walk from the Erwan Shrine nearby. You may try your luck while checking out other attractions.

Branches and Opening Hours

The two branches are very reachable. The first one is within 10 minutes walking distance from Chit Lom BTS station and the second one as itself suggest is at Rama 9 MRT station. The third one is also at Pratunam but closer to Ratchaprarop train station (the transit from Bangkok City Center to BKK station).
